Hong Guangxiang (1938-2014), male, comes from Qinghua Street in Wuyuan County which is entitled "the most scenic village in china". Despite the beautiful natural scenery, the village had formally suffered from schistosomiasis which utterly desolated this land, this fact inspired a generation of aspiring young men including little Hong.

As the old saying goes: “Difficulty breeds greatness." Coming from a poor family and the painful memories that parents were all suffered from chronic bronchitis and died of chronic pulmonary heart disease made Mr. Hong nurse an ambition to be a doctor at an early age. After years of struggle, he has become one of the founders of National Respiratory Subject of TCM , involved in the Research Program for Prevention and Treatment of chronic bronchitis which was personally initiated and led by Premier Zhou Enlai, and was chosen as the head of the program about the prevention and treatment of chronic bronchitis in TCM as well as integrated Chinese and western medicine. Furthermore, the scientific research achievements had earned him a high approbation among colleagues.

Nothing can bring so much happiness for him as striving for the ideal does, gifted little Hong always showed an uncompromising desire to be the number one. He is known for saying that:" I am short in physical while I can be giant in mental." It is this tenacious quality which shaped by independent character laid a solid foundation for a brilliant future.

Witnessed the significant therapeutic effect of TCM on both mild symptoms and even severe or chronic diseases, deeply impressed by his two uncles who enjoyed the status as respectful Chinese medicine physicians, Mr. Hong was entrusted by his father to uncle`s as an intern when he was 15, which totally set his full potentials in TCM free. Since then he was devoted to TCM classics including Recipes in Rhyme, Nature of Drugs of the Pearl Bag in Songs, Essential Readings in Medicine, Huangdi`s Cannon of Medicine and Treatise on Cold-induced Disease.  In 1957, he was admitted to the only institution of TCM within Jiangxi province - Jiangxi Institution of Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Educated by famous Chinese medicine physicians: Dong Jianhua, Lu Zhizheng, Ren Jixue, Yan Dexin, Zhu Liangchun, Wan Yousheng and Zhang Haifeng, little Hong has grown the idea of being an TCM master. And then he attended Jiangxi Institution of Medicine and majored in western medicine for 4 years with an attempt to combine Chinese medicine with western medicine therapeutically.

Having been devoted himself entirely for more than 50 years to the development of TCM without any break, Prof. Hong insisted on being creative academically, considering the theory of TCM as guidance and the clinical practice as basis in medical teaching and research, attaching great importance to the syndrome identification principles.

A book related that Prof. Hong has acquired a reputation as pioneer in the field of TCM for being proficiency in TCM and saving lives without any payback. Prof. Hong met with considerable reviews from Outlook Weekly which is the most famous weekly magazine in China:” As an expert in pulmonary disease and intractable miscellaneous disease of internal medicine, not only his extinct medical skill, but also genuinely care and comfort for people brought him patients from home and aboard. “Out of great expectations, patients would either queue up to register as early as 4:00 in the morning or even sleep with thin mats on the ground of hospital.

In 1992, Prof. Hong fascinated over 200 foreign scholars with his lectures in France about TCM`s contributions to human health and important influence in the development of international medicine, which brought about a France-dominated multinational conference that advocated adjustments to each country`s traditional medicine policy and diffusion of TCM. After that, he was invited to give lectures for many countries, including America, Belgium and Malaysia. His particular viewpoints about TCM in Chinese Magazine gained colleagues` appreciation.

Prof. Hong excelled at the treatment of respiratory diseases and intractable miscellaneous diseases involving bronchial asthma, bronchiectasia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He brought forward three therapeutic principles, which are “the recurrent trouble of asthma roots in phlegm-stasis remain of lung”, “warming is integral to the treatment of pulmonary disease” and “blood stagnancy should be treated by regulating qi first”. His new drugs – Juanxiao Tablet, Dongwan Zhike Granule and Kechuan Guben Granule were all well-received by domestic and foreign patients. In clinical practice, creative and bold use of formula characterized him, for example, he applied Yanghe Decoction which is from Life-saving Manual of Diagnosis and Treatment of External Disease and Yiyi Fuzi Baijiang Powder whose indication is intestine abscess to bronchiectasia; treated bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by Yiqi Huwei Decoction, Buyuan Decoction which are evolved from modified Guizhi Decoction and Buzhong Yiqi Decoction individually. What`s even more marvelous is he cured ill-defined fever through abandoned fomula – Wuji Powder, this ingenuity not only have broken new ground for traditional formulas, but also have enriched the theory of TCM.

In the past years, He has held 3 patents and 2 new drugs which have been granted by the National Patent Bureau. With nearly one hundred dissertations published and 10 books issued under his general editorship, one of which - The Great Dictionary of TCM won him the second prize of National Scientific and Technology Advancement Award, this seasoned academic also lectured over 20 masters and doctors specializing in respiratory medicine and assumed the office of Vice President, then the Party secretary of Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. As the leader of the university, he held the positions of Professor and Chief Physician of Respiratory Department at Affiliated Hospital, instructor of both masters and doctors at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Director of China Association of TCM, committee of Chinese Medical Association, Deputy Director of Expert Committee of Pulmonary Disease, Advisor of Pulmonary Disease Committee of World TCM Association. He enjoyed the special subsidy from the State Department in 1991 and was selected as the first group of “Traditional Chinese Medicine Master” by National Administration of TCM the next year. In the same year, he was recorded in IBC Cambridge.

Prof. Hong played the leadership role in improving education system during his tenure, his pioneered education policy - “college should take teaching as priority, then cultivate scholars and self-develop the economy at the same time” set a shining example to other institutions and was highly valued by the State Department and Provincial Government. His skill and nerve brought the Jiangxi University of TCM into one of the top 30 recognized institutions, made him received by President Jiang in recognition of his contribution to education, especially closely correlated with the rise of a major power- Pharmaceutical Group of Jiangxi University of TCM.

As the old saying goes:” the old horse in the stable is yet dreaming of heroic exploits.” Cherishing high aspiration in his seventies, Prof. Hong still has been pursuing relentlessly superb skills in TCM clinical practice.
